The research paper titled “On the Basics of Conditional Handover for 5G Mobility” by Henrik Martikainen, Ingo Viering, Andreas Lobinger and Tommi Jokela was accepted to be presented in the PIMRC 2018, Sep 10-12 in Bologna, Italy.
The research for this paper was done in cooperation with Nokia Bells Labs during the years 2017 and 2018.
The paper presents and studies the conditional handover (CHO) mechanism for the Fifth Generation New Radio (5G NR). CHO splits the handover into two parts: communication with source cell is done early and late with the target cell. This improves the handover robustness significantly. The paper studies the different CHO options including self optimizing networks (SON) methods. CHO is expected to be included in the upcoming IEEE release 16 standard for 5G NR.
